On one of my machines running XP and one of mine running Vista, my DVD WRITERS would exhibit this behavior (read DVDs fine, write DVDs, read data CDs, but not read I have an HP Pavilion DV9000 and I've tried taking the drive out and then reinstalling it and going through the device manager. I uninstalled iTunes and all the other apple components which allowed my computer to realize that there WAS something wrong with the driver.
