You may have a CD-ROM drive that is not well calibrated. Try using ScanDisc. Audio Extraction Test--this test determines the average rate digital audio is extracted from the drive. A hard disk requires much more preparation than a CD-ROM drive, which outside of inserting a disc, requires no media preparation at all.

This means that the files may be on the disk, but Windows Explorer cannot see them.
