If you are encoding at too high of a bitrate your dvd player can't keep up when trying to play it. What does this syntax mean? The VOB files are the video objects, they're what you want. I can play 1080p mkvs just fine (as long as they're properly encoded) ...

You may also want to look at Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) & SMPlayer - both open source & popular. It's a gui for mplayer, which is an extremely robust linux port. I've got the latest version of the Firmware from Sony and the problem also occurred with the previous version of the Firmware also.
