Go into view\options\player\formats and check the autoplay\dvd box. No dice. If you are encoding at too high of a bitrate your dvd player can't keep up when trying to play it. The thing being that VLC has a sort of internal codec structure that does not connect to other players. They have installer or portable /zip versions. This happens especially in older or cheap players, but none the less you don't want your videos looking bad anytime on anyplayer.
